'Melodramatic' Solar Flare Threatens To Disrupt Pirate Radio

Brown Nose the Pirate, Staff Writer
Radio Paranoia News Disservice/June 8, 2011

OFFICIOUS PUS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE PUSTROBUTION

An unusually melodramatic solar flare observed by a Defense Emissions Radiation Projects space observatory on Tuesday could set the stage for some emotional disruptions to shortwave pirate radio over the next week or so, officials said on condition of anonymity.

R1 radio blackouts are predicted to continue through June 9, said a cowardly rumor mongering anonymous official, who added "Don't mention my name, okay? I don't need any aggravating e-mail from Commander Bunny, like the last DERP guy whose name was quoted in connection with a solar flare that disrupted radio. He still has myxomatosis scabs."

The Sun's grandly theatrical discharge unleashed a firestorm of overacting on a level not witnessed since the infamous Summer 2008 pirate war, and will likely lead to retaliatory radiation from WBNY's International Relay Service by the weekend, according to the Harmful Airborne Radiation Emissions Service.

"I sense the monkey paw of Bram Stoker in this," asserted Commander Bunny, self-declared leader of the Rodent Revolution. "And if not him, then it's almost certainly the fault of Al Fansome or Radio Ga-Ga. I wouldn't put it past the Canadians to get Doc John involved in molesting the ionosphere either. He's always going on and on about HAARP, probably runs the whole thing himself.

"I'm expecting SIO 555 signal reports all weekend, if I have to unleash my entire sock drawer to get the results I demand. There will be Karmic retribution if I get anything less," declared the hare. "Science? Don't give me that crap. Physics don't apply to me.

"Are you putting in enough exclamation marks and random capitalization?" demanded the rabbit. "Let me see your notes - no, you're doing it wrong, I don't care what the AP style guide says. You nasty reporters, you're ruining my press conference," said the rabbit.

A bystander's pickle was then snatched away by a man, later identified as his vice presidential candidate, Kracker, who, apparently believing it to be a microphone, held the pickle close to his lips and slurred "Yew guise wanna f00kin play? Lesh play." The presidential and vice presidential hopefuls were then hoisted up and tucked under the enormous t-shirt of campaign manager Mr. J.S. of Mount Kisco, NY, who was heard to say "No, you can't have another minute."

"This flare-up was nothing short of scenery chewing," said George Spelvin, program coordinator for the HARES Melodramatic Outpouring Prediction Engine.

"We saw the initial flare for the melodramatic occurring and it wasn't that big, just a slight sobbing sound and sniffling, comparable to Glenn Beck's "Ah jes' luv mah country, an' ah feer fer it" speech, but then the flame war associated with it -- we got lagomorphic universal laughs beyond what we normally see with a big coronal mess injection," he said.

Those psychodrama energy levels, measured in lulz, are expected to confine any low power shortwave radio emissions to a geographic area roughly the size and shape of a typical rabbit hutch, and to a few imaginary listeners in Berserkistan, said the HARES spokesman. "Not much different than in favorable propagation conditions," he added with a shrug.

Asked for comment on how the solar melodramatic flare would affect the weekend's Radio Paranoia programming, spokestroll Guise Faux said "Radio? We don't do radio. We're trolls."

Sheen drives invisible car off invisible cliff
In a related story, embattled actor Charlie Sheen added another chapter to his increasingly bizarre story when he claimed to have driven an invisible car off an invisible cliff. Sheen claimed this week's solar flare disrupted the vehicle's automated HAARP-proof guidance system (available from The Power Hour and similarly reliable GCN affiliates, next to the Chi-magnets).

Faced by skeptical reporters who asked about his absence of apparent injuries, Sheen declared "They're invisible injuries. What are you, a moron?"

"I was just on my way to a high security telephone hookup with my buddy Alex Jones, and I'm in the zone, I'm in the phone-cone, I'm in the Cone-of-Silence-of-the-Sheeple, look at all the stupid people being fleeced," explained the actor.

"I'm, like, bi-invisible. No, no, I'm TRI-invisible. I'm do-or-die-invisible, winning pie-in-the-sky invisible, man, I'm WIN-visible," explained Sheen. "You can't figure me out."

"That part is actually true," said a police spokesman in response to Sheen's final statement. No investigation is planned.

"I will defend Charlie Sheen's honor to the death," declared celebrity-mooching starstruck talk radio host Alex Jones. "His death, I mean."

Guise Faux Unmasked!

“Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.”
-- Oscar Wilde

My dread secret is out, and I am relieved. This week I revealed that I, Guise Faux, am Commander Bunny.

Those of you who dare may read my confession on my other blog**. But if you are too stoned stunned to accept the Truth! Here are a few quotes to PROVE the Truth of What I Say!!!

"...Guise ... really the Bunny, spoofing the dumber-than-rocks monkeys..."

"Radio Paranoia ... its really Commander Bunny making fun of the dumber-than-rocks monkeys, yet again."

"The question is; “Is Commander Bunny behind all these websites just jerking our chains”???"

"He’s been known to spoof the monkeys in the past...

...Commander Bunny is in fact Guise Faux..."
"...he controls these slack-jawed, lip-droolers too ... Commander Bunny was behind every conspiracy in Pirate Radio!"

"Is it any wonder that Commander Bunny is the MOST POPULAR PIRATE EVER! No other Pirate Operator has so many websites, so many blogs, so much attention, on them! FACE IT, Commander Bunny is the most popular Pirate ever, the facts are irrefutable."

--Commander Bunny, May 25, 2011

And there you have the Full and Complete EVIDENCE, dear readers. Are you Surprised? For so many years my Genius has labored to create so many characters, alter-egos, aliases and noms de guerre that at times I could scarce recall who I really am. But Commander Bunny did it ALL for YOU! For your Entertainment! And how do You repay him? With nasty rumors and slanders!

My heart aches with myxomatosis yet I must at last reconcile myself to you. To all of you nasty monkeys, with your slanders and rumors and gossiping, destroying the work of good pirates. And not merely good pirates but ME, the Greatest Pirate of them ALL!

In the end the only true Friends I could depend on were my oldest and closest allies who have stood firm with me sat neatly folded in my sock drawer, through many Trials and Tribulations: Beans. Mosby. Thumper. Bouncer. And GRENADE! Always Grenade. It sleeps under my pillow. At night it whispers to me Great Secrets. It reveals Mysteries that only I can hear. Camping knew nothing. Nothing! And if only you would Worship Me I would share all with you! I lavish you with Gifts, riches unheard of from any pirate in history! Real QSL cards, custom made for each program, not eQSLs with crappy art those other so-called "pirates" steal from the "internet" and slap on their logo and call That a QSL?!? Custom refrigerator magnets that also cure arthritis! T-shirts that will look sexy on your imaginary girlfriends! Bumper stickers to decorate your Big Wheels! But you BETRAY ME!!

But it's okay. It's okay. I pardon you...

"They cast a spell on you, you know, the monkeys. When you work closely with them, like I do, you see this. They have this power. It's like a virus. Some of my friends are infected with this virus. They should be pitied, not punished. They should receive treatment because this is as real as typhus. I see it all the time. It's a matter of QSLs? Hmm?"

So, while I am in such a magnanimous mood, I will permit some of you to forgive me for my transgressions.

AV: I know you didn't deserve the malicious treatment you got from me under my sockpuppet "Beans." And I made up that computer voice program blaming you for the July 4, 2008, computer voice broadcast that launched the pirate war. I guess we all died a little in that damn war.

Chris Smolinski: You were an okay guy. A little stuffy and pedantic at times. And you angered my friend Bill O. Rights. He's like Bruce Banner - you wouldn't like him when he's angry. Or green.

Radio Ga-Ga and Outhouse Radio: You guys are terrific pirates. And Outhouse got his cherry busted - how cool is that! He's got serious street cred now - I'm actually a little jealous... I might even have a tiny bunny-crush on the guy. It's just that damned SSTV... you don't know what it does to these sensitive rabbit ears. It's like pulling barbed wire through my skull. If you had ears like mine you'd understand. It made me crazy, so it's not my fault. But I'll accept your forgiveness because it takes a big bunny to admit when he's wrong.

Poet: We go back a long ways. BFF, right? Let's let bygones by bygones and I'll graciously accept your forgiveness if you promise to never play "Billy, Don't Be A Hero" ever again.

Al Fansome: Alas, poor Fansome. I knew him, Hare-atio. A fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy. Well, before Kracker showed up around 2005 and behaved like Leo Gorcey with Asperger's Syndrome. He hath bored me with his backtalk a thousand times, and now how abhorr'd in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it.

Doc John: Canadians just rub my hare the wrong way. Must be all that plaid and those toques. You guys always look like you're going hunting. Makes a bunny nervous. Tell me more about this Naughty Acrobatic Monkey Bunny Love Assignations. Maybe we can be friends.

And last but not least, Spore: Dude, I totally forgot *I* did that cut-up, mashup version of the WBNY pirate feud show. I get so confused between being Guise Faux and Commander Bunny, I completely forgot I'd mashed up and deconstructed my own audio. And I blamed it on you? My bad. So, uh... sorry about that whole "child molester" thing. No hard feelings, right? Is that a shotgun...? Hey, can we talk? How about a QSL package, on the house... hutch.... okay, I gotta scurry now, nice talking with you.

Whew! I feel a lot better after getting that off my chest and allowing all of you to forgive me for my occasional minor lapses from brilliance to mere competence.

And don't you all feel silly that I TOTALLY FOOLED ALL OF YOU S-T-U-P-I-D MONKEYS!!! Vote for me and you'll never be fooled again. I will do all of the thinking for you.

Now, if you'll all give me your home addresses I have some very special QSL packages of carrots for each and every one of you.

Your pal,
CB, aka Guise Faux, aka The Greatest! Because false modesty is unbecoming of the truly Great when it's truly true.

**(Update 31 May 2011: In a peculiar twist, CB redirected his WBNY site to ToRP blog as of Memorial Day weekend, see screencaps hare, hare and hare. Thanks for the additional traffic... I think? -- GF)

Crapture weekend

Crapture weekend seems to best describe May 20th-22nd, 2011, at least from the limited perspective of radio aficionados. Harold Camping's prediction for a May 21st rapture didn't match the timetable of El Señor. The HFU experienced down time and the FRN upped the ante with major fail. Apparently only their web servers were eligible for the Pearly Gates. And propagation still sucks. Once again we couldn't hear even the faintest trace of a carrier from WBNY's mighty Grenade or Corsair.

But first, our best wishes for a speedy recovery to those in the Joplin, Missouri area, which was devastated by a deadly tornado over the weekend. Joplin is where the server for the FRN is located, which probably explains why the site went down Sunday. We also hope FRN site owner John Cruzan is doing well.

Speaking of the Fabulous Rabbit Nuthugger's personal vanity site being down, we noticed that after a temporary outage in the HF Underpants site Saturday, the bunny mafia was so excited it/they/he couldn't decide which socks to wear for dancing on the HFU's grave. One of RP's sekrit squirrels inside the FRN spied a thread crowing about the HFU's outage that was first attributed to the Prime Minister, (probably a bit of carelessness in the heat of preparing some crow au gratin) which was deleted and replaced by the same post from Officious Pus Release, which was also deleted and finally replaced by Commander Bunny's post declaring "I SHUT DOWN THE HF UNDERPANTS!" "I SHAT MY OWN UNDERPANTS!" We're guessing the first two socks had too many holes for the bunnyman's Holy War against the Underpants Gnomes.

Only a rage comic can do justice to how the bunnyman must feel now that his personal cult site is as dysfunctional as the loopy fur between his floppy ears. But we all know rage comics always end the same way: FFFFFUUUU-

Fortunately, His Hareness still has his own hutch where he keeps fans updated with useful information.

El Señor Major, The Big Mister, The Great Ineffable One, has His own unearthly timetable - and it ain't UTC. So WYFR is back to reruns, with occasional sheepish sounding updates from an announcer (no word from Bro Camping as of Sunday). We at RP don't take much pleasure in pot shots at the Bro. We listen to his programs occasionally and for all the recent fuss, we find him to be somnolent at best and, at worst, no more guilty than many other prognosticators in sleuthing the sooth about the grand finale. (Note to self: Work in a Fin de siècle joke - that dream Saturday night about a shark riding a unicycle through the ocean must bode well for our destiny as the next Nostradamus.)

  1. Predict Furpocalypse
  2. ???
  3. Prophet!!!
'Til next we meet, brethren, this monkey's gone to heaven. And if Kim Deal is there to play and sing, it will be heavenly!

Red Sky at Morning - Pirates Take Warning

"They have dealt with me like thieves of mercy:
but they knew what they did;
I am to do a good turn for them."
--Hamlet, Act IV, Scene vi, aka "The pirate scene"

We've found some diverse fans and unexpected allies at Tales of Radio Paranoia. Are there really more anarchists than monarchists in pirate radio? For now... maybe. Alliances based on the principle of "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" tend to be tenuous. Anarchists often find themselves on the wrong end of a rope, so we'll probably see you hanging around Owl Creek Bridge or Golgotha. And by "you" I mean me.

Google's Blogger platform has cyberfarted most of the past week and ToRP was inaccessible for a few days. Since I'm way behind on some articles anyway I'll put those aside and just pass along some bits and pieces of news, rumors and behind the scenes chatter, mostly related to the recent apparent renewal of FCC enforcement in HF pirate radio..

Also, the finished articles I had in the can stunk like someone forgot to flush:
  • Mushroom Management and Myxomatosis
  • The Cult of Personality Disorder
  • The Irony of Anonymity
  • Are You a "Good Pirate"?
  • The Joy of Socks
  • You're No Bunny 'Til Some Bunny Loves You
After re-reading the first drafts my first reaction was "Fuck me, I sound like Beans!" Yeah, that kind of ranting.

If you're not familiar with the U.S. pirate radio scene over the past decade, "Beans" has been the most vitriolic and prolific of the many Commander Bunny sockpuppets. ToRP belching bean gas... not a good thing. I might as well write "Why IRC Doesn't Suck Nearly As Much As Beans Claims", supported by my own modest sock drawer cadre. But I won't. As far as you know.

Renewed FCC enforcement in HF pirate radio
Most of the following information has already circulated throughout the U.S. shortwave pirate radio scene since February this year. I'll try to tie together the loose strands of information and analyze what happened and why it happened the way it did.

Some of us have been baffled by the relative absence of open discussion about recent FCC actions affecting shortwave pirate radio. In a recent DIYmedia update regarding WEAK's February 15, 2011 encounter with the FCC, John Anderson wrote:
"There has been little public discussion of this among shortwave pirate enthusiasts, but if I were a broadcaster I'd want to know about FCC enforcement activity so that I could properly assess my relative risk of being on the air."
Why haven't we heard more until WEAK got The Knock? Anyone who lurks around the North American scene knows that it has its own unique characteristics and strong personalities. The influence of the FRN has loomed large for many years, often to the benefit of all participants but, especially since the 2008 "pirate war", increasingly to the detriment of the scene as the self-proclaimed premier pirate radio site devolved from a Free Radio Network to an exclusive hutch for Fabulous Rabbit Nuthuggers. To some extent the cliquishness has decreased over the past few weeks. Who knows how long that will last. But, again, that's a digression for another article.

Since 2010 at least four U.S. shortwave radio pirates have been warned by the FCC to discontinue operation of their unlicensed stations, according to various sources. As far as we have been able to ascertain, none involved NALs (Notice of Apparent Liability) or NOUOs (Notice of Unlicensed Operation) and none has shown up on the FCC website's database.

The shortwave pirate stations which have reportedly received what the FCC calls a Warning of Unlicensed Operation or "verbal warning" since 2010 include:
  • Weather Radio (April 2010, confirmed by the operator of Weather Radio)
  • Sycko Radio (2010 date unknown, per Feb. 2011 WBNY e-mail news list)
  • Outhouse Radio (late 2010, no direct confirmation, but reported by reliable source)
  • WEAK (February 15, 2011, confirmation received directly from WEAK that same night, later reported by Piratesweek podcast and Hauser's DXLD)
I was reluctant to publish this earlier because it might result in embarrassment or unanticipated consequences for those involved. I was a big fan of all four stations. However it's moot now. Since the February 15, 2011, WEAK bust, Commander Bunny e-mailed more than 40 pirate station operators and listeners about stations getting The Knock. Those recipients forwarded e-mails to others, and so on.

Interference with official comms on the funny bands
According to WEAK's Warning of Unlicensed Operation, the FCC specified a complaint of interference with military or other official communications. Makes sense. For years there have been military comms between 6900-7000 kHz and many DXers have noted a recent increase in ALE, CW and other data on or near the 6925 kHz frequency popular with U.S. shortwave pirates.

I checked with DXers who monitor utes, as well as IRC #wunclub logs. One DXer in particular is running 24 hour bandscans to monitor 6800-7000 kHz to identify the types comms and skeds. Link-11/TADIL-A has recently been recorded from 6940-6953, along with PSK on 6894 and 6935, and RTTY near 6922. Several times this year I've heard ALE near 6925, and MARS voice nets near 6900 and 7000 (I'd need to check my logs, but the MARS nets were around 6903 and 6997). I'll attach a recent bandscan graphic provided by a DXer who's monitoring the popular pirate funny bands.

So, why is WYFR on 6915 and 6985 exempt? I'm guessing the FCC figures they'll be gone after May 21, so... problem solved by the coming Zombie Apocalypse.

On the plus side, so far I haven't heard any FCC agent call a pirate operator a child molester on air or threaten to stalk them at home or assault them at work or at the Winter Fest. So, thankfully, pirates won't need to sue the FCC for copyright violation for stealing WBNY and RJI comedy material.

See, I can be Mr. Sunshine sometimes.

The WEAK bust and Artie Bigley
Sources have told me that Artie Bigley (SWL and regular contributor to Glenn Hauser's DXLD) has been frantically e-mailing people in the pirate scene about these reported FCC warnings (confirmed via copies of e-mails I've seen) and has FOIA'd requests for FCC confirmation. And since most FCC activity is public record, Bigley's reports via DXLD don't violate any confidentiality.

WEAK's bust had already been reported via the Piratesweek podcast and on Hauser's DXLD. At least three sources have told me that Bigley has pressed them for specific details (which sources all told me they declined) and obtained confirmation from the FCC via a FOIA. Bigley has been asked to withhold specific information about WEAK's name and address, but he's under no legal obligation to do so. (Update: Per DX LISTENING DIGEST 11-19, May 10, 2011, WEAK's name and location were withheld, as Mr. Bigley agreed with WEAK's request. -- GF)

I've been told that Bigly wants a copy of Sealord's audio recording of WEAK's FCC visit. Most of it was already on a Piratesweek podcast. There's nothing on it that reveals WEAK's identity or location so I've attached a short streaming mp3 to the bottom of this blog entry. From the perspective of pirate radio history and trivia, it's a fascinating and unique sign post. I'll take the heat for providing the audio, so don't blame Sealord. I copied the audio off the original log back on February 15, when several of us were still wondering whether it was a prank.

Oh, by the way, Doug Miller... you've got a serious ground loop hum. Most pirate radio DXers are too polite to tell ops about such problems. But we're not polite. And if you need a jingle or more exciting station ID, contact our marketing department and we'll set you up. Also, you should send Sealord an FCC QSL. He's too nice a guy to ask for a memento of WEAK's misfortune. But, c'mon... why should George Zeller have the only FCC QSL?

One of us!
A few e-mails I've received have described Bigley's interest in WEAK's unfortunate encounter with the FCC as unusually obsessive. My only thought was: "Eccentric. Persistent. Obsessively curious. Detail oriented. Sounds like a typical DXer. " One of us! One of us! Gooble-gobble, gooble-gobble!

Considering the nature of humour in the U.S. pirate radio scene it's likely that the worst that will happen is Bigley will be memorialized in parody, satire and SSTV for years to come. Kracker will hit up memegenerator for another unfunny variation of a shake-and-bake meme invented by 12-year-olds, involving some references to penises. Captain Ganja will 'shop Artie's head onto a goat. You know, the great thing about about stoner humour is that long after something stops being funny, digging up a joke, running over it, backing up, running over it again, propping it up and running over it again can sometimes breathe a whole new dimension of unfunnyness into a situation. Like farting at a city council meeting.

So go easy on Artie. It's not like he called anyone a child molester. At least he has enough respect to not steal Commander Bunny's favorite material.

Paranoia, the destroyer
Let's speculate about why Atlanta office FCC agent Doug Miller transmitted the station closure message, which occurred during a WEAK broadcast. We know the FCC at least occasionally reads shortwave pirate radio hobbyist sites (despite naysaying from Billo, who seems stuck in the year 1995 - mebbe it takes awhile for the postmodern world to reach his Montana one-holer). Suppose they recognized the rampant paranoia that has infested the scene the past few years. What better way for a largely ineffectual agency to maximize the impact of an enforcement action that amounted to little more than putting on their best trollface and sternly administering a finger waggling "Naughty pirate, no-no-no, kthxbai!"

IOW, the FCC did it for the lulz.

What better way to troll a group of hobbyists who are often their own worst enemies?

And that's a topic for another time.

Dishing With Dea: April gossip galore!

From Radio Paranoia
Dishing With Dea

Hello, darlings! Guise has left me to my own devices while he dashes off to Berserkistan or some such place to advise a new programme director on news coverage of recent unpleasantness. Seems they've lost their last three to abduction, firebombing and defection to comparative safety in Libya. Must keep things in perspective, mustn't we?

And that naughty Brownie is late again with his "Fester" finale. Something about on a tout essayé. But, honestly, darlings, we very much doubt he's tried everything. We saw him pass up a chance at a liaison with the cutest Siamese twins - acrobats! no less, formerly of Cirque du Soleil - while carousing with Fifi in Marseille. Oh, that Fifi. She shows up in the oddest places. (Often in the arms of ravishing women, so we hear! Shhh...)

Meanwhile, we'll share a few snippets that have come across the wire since last we dished with you.

According to GH of DXLD (11-16, 20 Apr 2011), AB reports a confirmation that our dear friend at WEAK was indeed knocked up by the FCC this February last. All confirmed by Ragnar's podcast as well. We'd already heard it through the vines almost immediately, all very hush-hush you know, and kept quite mum 'til it was resolved. Apparently just a verbal warning, no NAL, and we're glad of that. Still, he's done and we're quite shattered by the whole affair. He was (and still is) a true blue friend of free radio and shall be missed.

Speaking of which, do we sense the devious hands of K in this recent piquant bit of humour on memegenerator.net? Seems some rascal is trying to make AB famouse, hmm? Alas, memgen is down at the moment, apparently a mudkip infection, but we did capture a hint from Google. If any of our treasured readers manages to snare a copy of the "Courage Dwight" variation for AB, please do share!

And speaking of famouse, we're told that naughty K inadvertently made an owie when he made an outie of another pirate during the summer 2008 pirate war! Yes, indeed, apparently in his state of miff and hiiiggghhh spirits he exposed another operator by real name and address? No!?! Li'l Dea, say it isn't so! Yesss, darlings, per AB, an audio recording has K ranting about having access to real names and home addresses obtained from an ebay shipping list for CB memorabilia, during which fit of pique he exposed another pirate. We certainly hope it's all a terrible misunderstanding. When we know more, so shall you, dear ones. Meanwhile, K, take heed the words of Falstaff, himself a sometime carouser and braggart: The better part of valor is discretion. One never knows for certain who is a fellow airwave buccaneer, so...

Finally, dear ones, our sources at Fabulous Rabbit Neverland tell us that CB promises to swear off his addiction to dirty socks, but implores please-please-puhLEEZ don't blame LW or PM for his misdeeds. Well, Dea is nothing if not forgiving and oh-so understanding of creative geniuses. Little long-eared maniac, we still adore you. Now, scurry off to the vet for your myxomatosis booster before we change our minds.

'Til next time, darlings, keep the ionosphere warm for us!

Dea Fauxnette is a sight-impaired but sharp-eared correspondent for Tales of Radio Paranoia. Don't try to sneak anything past her. She heard you coming before you got started.

Dream a little dream of CB

I had a dream... was originally inserted into the "Fugue dreams" blog entry, but seemed to digress too far afield. It's related thematically, but seems less cluttered in a separate post. Apologies to our readers (both of you) for any confusion.

Anyway, we said to ourselves, "Selves," because GF suffers from referring to ourselves in the plural third person, which makes us almost as inFURiatingly pretentious as the bunny sock-mafia (emphasis on the fur) - "selves," we said, "one day, Commander Bunny will find this blog. And if he hasn't already blown a gasket and leaked varmint sauce all over the internets, let's insert a disclaimer, shall we?: All things considered, we luv da bunnyman's work.

Hard to believe, hmm? After all, look at the snark content of Tales of Radio Paranoia. Sure sounds like a h8r, amirite?

But occasionally CB can be brilliant... when the puppet master doesn't confuse himself with the puppet, and start acting like Anthony Hopkins in Magic, or Cliff Robertson in The Dummy (classic Twilight Zone).

When the bunnyman is at his best - which means, not pretending a 10 watt AM signal makes him King Of All Pirate Radio, and not alienating everyone who's actually independent minded enough to call him on his bullshit about using a basketful of dirty socks to f4g up the For Rabbit Nuthuggers - some of his audio editing voodoo is freaking brilliant. It influenced some of our own programming style - ironic, considering that one of RP's remixes seemed to provoke his latent fear of unanticipated social encounters with other species. But we'll cover that in another Tale of Radio Paranoia.

Meanwhile, give a listen to the WBNY short from 2007, I Had A Dream, 8:30 minutes of rabitty goodness, the sorta weirdness we luv. There's probably a streaming audio version on the Internet Archives, but the URL eludes us at the moment. If anyone else knows, please post it in a comment or e-mail us.

Fugue dreams

I had a dream. When I woke before dawn today all I could remember was a word: Fugue. While I don't believe that every dream is significant, that's an oddly specific word or symbolic element to recall.

fugue
1 a: a musical composition in which one or two themes are repeated or imitated by successively entering voices and contrapuntally developed in a continuous interweaving of the voice parts.
Hmm... interesting, but not necessarily significant, at least not in terms of coming up with blog filler. Probably just heard it in my sleep since I often doze off with the overnight classical station playing. But the implication of a recurring theme seems to resonate with us.

1 b: something that resembles a fugue especially in interweaving repetitive elements
Ah, now we're getting somewhere...

2: a disturbed state of consciousness in which the one affected seems to perform acts in full awareness but upon recovery cannot recollect the acts performed.

Psychiatry: A pathological amnesiac condition during which one is apparently conscious of one's actions but has no recollection of them after returning to a normal state. This condition, usually resulting from severe mental stress, may persist for as long as several months.

(From Wikipedia): Dissociative fugue usually involves unplanned travel or wandering, and is sometimes accompanied by the establishment of a new identity.

Oh, I see what you did there, noggin. Trying to remind me to get back to some of the topics proposed in the first Tales of Radio Paranoia entry:
Alrighty then, the Fest story is coming along nicely, almost done, still waiting for BNtP's fourth and final entry in the Fester trilogy.

Stations getting The Knock from the FCC... hmm... this one may need to wait, at least regarding specifics. At least one station operator with whom we've discussed the incident prefers not to identify itself in conjunction with any public reports about the investigation. For now let's just say that RP is aware of three U.S. shortwave pirate station operators being visited by the FCC during the past year. Reportedly all three received what the agency calls a "verbal warning" (technically an oral warning, according to the descriptions given by affected operators, but we're parsing linguistics here with the government). Since that type of warning does not appear in the publicly available records on the FCC website, the site is not entirely useful as an indicator of current agency activity. From what we've been able to discern from studying recent records, the FCC only refers to "verbal warnings" in retrospect as part of their affidavits when pursuing official actions such as Notices of Apparent Liability, and forfeitures (which is how the FCC describes citations that include monetary penalties). RP may attempt a Freedom Of Information Act request to see if we can shake loose any information regarding these verbal warnings, but we are not hopeful. Field notes and internal memos are notoriously difficult to obtain via FOIA from any federal regulatory agency, unless the requesting party is involved in legal representation of the party.

Leporidae dissembling... the recurring theme of dissociative identity disorder is tempting to pursue but, eh, been there, done that. Still don't have the t-shirt, however. RP doubts His Hareness will see the humor in our blog. But if he does, we'd like a large.

Wars and rumors of wars! Yes, that's a good 'un. We'll tackle it soon. It's about time to offer an alternative perspective on the infamous Summer 2008 pirate war as well. So far we've refrained from publishing anything specific, here or elsewhere, out of consideration for three particular individuals who were subjected to some rather unpleasant attentions between the summer and fall of 2008.

And the most recent snit - which involved a grotesque confabulation by the lagomorph in response to relatively mild satire drifting downward from the North - makes the topic relevant again. The continued theme of piratical bunnyfolk labeling enemies as "child molesters" goes far beyond mere hyperbole, slander or libel. It seems to hint at some deep seated anxieties. At the very least it should not go unchallenged by reasonable people. Not that RP counts itself among those reasonable people. But you might qualify.

A recent alt.pirate.radio newsgroup post seems to be an attempt to put some perspective on the most recent spat:
"At this point, who said what or provoked whomever else really just
doesn't fucking matter..." --(Marconi's Ghost)
But we're inclined to agree with John Poet of The Crystal Ship, who countered that at this point attempting to smooth over or downplay the most recent spat between His Hareness and our Canadians friends amounts to the unacceptable compromise of "...a 'false moral equivalance'..."

To be continued.

Book of the now: The Narcissist's Confabulated Life, by Dr. Sam Vaknin. "Moreover, he imposes his personal mythology on his nearest and dearest. Spouse, children, colleagues, friends, neighbors - sometimes even perfect strangers - must abide by the narcissist's narrative or face his wrath. The narcissist countenances no disagreement, alternative points of view, or criticism. To him, confabulation IS reality.

"We dare not confront or expose him, despite the outlandishness of his claims, the improbability of his stories, the implausibility of his alleged accomplishments and conquests. We simply turn the other cheek, or meekly avert our eyes, often embarrassed.

"Moreover, the narcissist makes clear, from the very beginning, that it is his way or the highway. His aggression - even violent streak - are close to the surface. He may be charming in a first encounter - but even then there are telltale signs of pent-up abuse. His interlocutors sense this impending threat and avoid conflict by acquiescing with the narcissist's fairy tales. Thus he imposes his private universe and virtual reality on his milieu - sometimes with disastrous consequences."

Fester, Part 3: Furpocalypse Now!

After a couple of weeks in rehab to recover from over-Festing indulgence, Brown Nose the Pirate returns to file what he describes as part 3 of 4 in his Winter SWL Fest 2011 trilogy.

RP wonders whether he was released too soon.

"We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats' feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar"
--The Hollow Men, T.S. Eliot

A big guy with an even bigger head wearing a cheese hat opens the door. For some reason I'm thinking Riff Raff from Rocky Horror, only gone to pot. Maybe it's the slack white hair and overhanging forehead. "Enter freely and of your own will," he says without any hint of welcome, "and leave behind your happiness, eh?"

I don't wanna seem too suspicious so I take in the room, casually, over his shoulder. The light's dim, greenish, and I can't see clearly, just shapes moving around. I move toward the threshold for a better look and walk into, I dunno, like a wall of soft putty. I tap my palm against it. It makes a hollow plonk with a low reverberation, like an untuned kettle drum. Transparent stuff, like glycerin, but the view through it is warped and twisted. I squint at Riff Raff.

Riff Raff snorts and says "I can't help you. If you want to enter the rabbit hole, you're on your own."

I poke the stuff with a finger. Won't quite go through, but feels like it might with a pen or knife. I don't have either one on me. Thanks, TSA, can't carry anything sharper than a crayon on flights now. I'm fishing through my jacket pockets and find a small piece of plastic card with some wires. I pull it out - a Tiny Tenna. Hadn't worked in years since the wires all pulled loose from the sloppy solder joints. Thought I'd thrown it away. I use the edge of the raw circuit board to slice open the pwdre sêr, enough to slip in one hand. The wound is trying to close so I let go of the Tiny Tenna and use both hands to pull apart an aperture and slip through as the slit closes with a flubbering bloomp sound. The Tiny Tenna is stuck in the goo, leaving a gash in the portal. Just as well, first time the piece of crap was useful.

A couple of Scrats - Mosby and Thumper on their collars - dart past my ankles, shinny up the portal and vomit up ectoplasm to patch the gash. That's what I just crawled through? Again I feel the tequila and beer doing the backstroke up my throat.

"Take these," says Riff Raff, shoving beer and cigarettes toward me.

"I don't smoke," I say, trying to wave him off but he pushes them into my hands anyway.

"Then don't inhale," he growls, "but you'll want 'em to kill the stink. This hutch hasn't been cleaned all w
eek."

Soon's I grab the brew and smokes he's reaching up into a hole in his cheese hat and pulls out a pad of paper and thrusts it toward me.

"What's this?" I mutter, turning the pad around, trying to read in the dim green light.

"Signal reports. Official WBNY signal reports."

"They're already filled out," I say, flipping through the pad. "Every one of 'em. 'SIO-555. Beautiful AM signal! Perfect audio! Brilliant programming! No one does it like Commander Bunny!'" Only thing not filled out are the check boxes next to the dozens of relays listed. "The dates and times are already filled out for these relays. They haven't even been aired yet." I point to the pads.

Riff Raff snorts dismissively. "Just fill 'em out and turn them in. Don't make trouble. Just check the boxes. Don't make things worse for me here, awright? Don't be a smartass. Just work with me." He stalks back toward the door.

"Hey, where is he?" I call toward his back, but Riff Raff is gone. I don't see anyone else I recognize.
I'm thinking I knew the risks, or imagined I knew. But the thing I felt the most, much stronger than fear, was the desire to confront him.

I look around and try to get a fix on the huge, dark, hazy room. I can see animals milling around, some in small packs, all on hind legs. Furries. Fucking place was full of 'em. I'm wishing Boomer was here. Only sane furry I knew of in the whole pirate radio scene. And even he was crazy, had a rep as a demolition expert, homemade grenades or some crazy shit.

A wild-eyed hippie with a grizzled beard scuttles toward me from across the room, three or four Nikons dangling from his neck and shoulders, clattering together, his ponytail flailing behind him from beneath a paisley bandanna tied around his head. "Hey, friend! Hey, hey, howya doin', howya doin', now watch out for those socks... on the floor! on the floor! Right, and watch out, those goddam Scrats bite, I tell ya, worst case of rabies and mxyomatosis you'll ever see. Hey, I'm Zoidberg, a Decapodian, Decapod DXer, photojournalist, and you got the cigarettes and beer and that's what I've been dreaming of, they won't give ya shit in here unless you're a furry, I dunno how you got so lucky," he speed talks as I hand over the smokes and brew.

As my eyes adjust to the dim light I can see bodies on the floor. Headless bodies, at the base of short antennas. A head impaled atop each antenna. Hotel note paper stuffed into their mouths, with "Nasty signal report!!!" scrawled on the notes. "Ruining it!" on another. "Nasty attacks!" "Destroying pirate radio!!!" Crude drawings of apes sketched on the death warrants.

CB is close. He's real close. I can't see him yet but I can feel him.

"The heads," Zoidberg mumbles, sounding embarrassed. "At the heads, you're looking. He even put Fansome's head up there. I, uh - sometimes he goes too far, you know - he's the first one to admit it! Well, I mean, not him, per se, but, umm... Pat, you know, Pat always... smooths things out after CB, y'know..."

"Fansome's not dead," I say.

"Yes, he is, I mean look, the head, the sign..."

"Take my word for it," I say, "he's not dead. He's not a human. He's more of a ca... anyway, that's not his body," I kick the body, and straw pops out. I look closer at the impaled heads and tap one - hollow. Fake. All the bodies, fake. Straw men.

"Remember us — if at all — not as lost
Violent souls, but only
As the hollow men
The stuffed men."

"Who are all these peop... furries?" I ask, looking around the room.

"His children, all his children, far as the eye can see. They think you're here to attack, umm... destroy... nasty, uh, y'know, um, ruin, ah, ruin it... all... and, uh... I hope that isn't true," he's babbling. Guy sounds like he's reciting a script, political talking points, and not doing a good job at it. I'd heard this Zoidberg character was smart but right now he seems like another buzzed up publicity flack.

"I'm just here to talk with him," I say. "He asked for me, so..."

"Hey, man, you don't talk to the Commander. You listen to him. CB has enlarged my mind... well, my QSL collection, anyway. He's a poet-warrior in the classic sense that, um, Bill O'Reilly is a pleasant guy or Tiger Woods is a faithful husband. I mean sometimes he'll, uh, well, you'll say 'Hey, I heard your show last night', right? And he'll just walk right by you, and he won't even notice you, no QSL, nothing. And suddenly he'll grab you, and he'll access your IP information and expose your identity and home address, call you a child molester, insult your family, and he'll say 'Do you know that "you" is the middle word in "ruin" and "ass" is the middle word in "nasty" and "hole" is the middle word in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Get it? YOU... ASS... HOLE.'

"I mean I'm no, I can't - I'm a little DXer, I'm a little DXer, he's, he's a great rabbit. I should have been a pair of ragged claws scuttling across floors of silent seas, whoop-whoop-whooping in search of a stink gland..."

"Shut the fuck up," I suggest. "If you talk again I'll punch you in the nuts."

I shrug off the sense of dread and move toward the center of the room. It smells like slow death in here, myxomatosis, madness. The floor is covered with urine soaked cedar shavings, droppings that look like brown M&Ms... and socks. Everywhere. Dirty socks. I nudge one with my toe. It sticks to my boot like it's covered in jizz. I bend down to look... fucksake, it is covered in jizz. I stagger backward, scrubbing my boot toe in the cedar shavings to wipe off the stuff, and step on another sock, this one stiff and stained.

"STOP KICKING MY FRIENDS!" a voice booms from a darkened corner across the room. I can just make out a pair of long ears through the dim haze.

"The socks, man, watch the socks, why don't you!" Zoidberg yells. "They're his friends... his best pseu... his friends... they speak, um, for him, you know? They help him communicate complex messages, uh... about his... superior philosophy and..." He trails off to gather his thoughts, then grabs one off the floor and holds it out at claw's length.

"Look! This is one of his favorites, see, it's still wet and sticky, he's used it a lot lately to rub out, umm, work out some, uh, complex problems about the FCC and government shutdowns and... radio... free speech, and... stuff."

"PUT BILLO DOWN!" roars the voice from across the room.

"Hrrrng poots!!!" comes a muffled voice from my left.

I pivot left, bumping my knee into someone's extended leg. It's covered in gauze... the whole body is covered in gauze, stained, soaked in yellow-green and suddenly I recognize the stench. Pus. Festering wounds. Seen it before, the last Great Pirate War of 2008, the one that never seemed to end.

"HRRRNGG POOOTSSS!!!" the mummy man wails.

"What's with him," I ask Zoidberg. He covers up his crotch with a camera bag. "Go ahead, I'm not going to punch you in the nuts."

"RF burns," he says. "Worst case anyone's ever seen. Can't be around a transmitter more than 10 watts now. He thinks that's huge power, thinks it can be heard at SIO-555 all around the world, but don't try to tell him any different. He's dying of terminal butthurt from it."

"Ppp hrrrng poots..." the mummy mumbles.

"What's he saying?" I ask.

"'Stop hurting the pirates!' It's pretty much all he says. Nobody knows beans about what he means by it. Pieces of him fall off, maybe?"

"Hey, hey," Zoidberg calls to a passing furry. "Fluff up his beanbag chair, get those beans arranged better to make him comfortable, why don't you? You gotta get the beans just right or he'll whine and cry all the time, try to hit you when you're just talking with the guy. Hey!" yells Zoidberg, way too loud, "Beans bag pus covered grouchy mummy guy, it's been years since medical school, so remind me: Butthurt in your species, fatal or non-fatal?"

While he's distracted by the mummy man I notice a zombie Elvis impersonator shuffling toward the door. I grab him by the arm. The arm comes off, still clutching a tote bag full of WBNY pogey bait. He stares transfixed at the QSL swag.

"Hey, Elvis, Evil Elvis," I whisper. He looks at me and grins. At least I think he's grinning... hard to tell with zombies - no lips.

"I need a favor, buddy," I say, and hand him my iPhone, loaded with a custom BCS app. "These are the co-ordinates for an air strike from Canada. If you don't see me back downstairs at the bar in one hour, call it in. The code is Furpocalypse, coordinates 6925. That's the order for the Canadians to drop a massive payload of butthurt trollbombs and begin the Psy-Fudd campaign. Can you do that? There might be a pennant in this for you."

Evil Elvis just grins and nods. Or maybe his last neck sinew just popped loose, I can't tell. I hand him his arm, still attached to the WBNY tote bag. "Sorry about that, buddy, you can probably glue that back on."

Evil Elvis shuffles toward the ectoplasm portal and just melts right through. There are advantages to being mostly dead.

Pirates of LazyTown

While pondering our recent bout with troll's remorse by consulting with the 4chanizens of /adv/ (because the best place to seek advice about antisocial behavior is among fellow trolls, amirite?)*, we visited /mu/ and /tv/ for the first time since last year and were reminded that many Anons are very creative folks.

If you don't lurk there often you probably have a negative impression of Anonymous as portrayed in mainstream news media, which tends to focus only on the more aggressive trolling of some /b/tards on raids. But Anons are often amusing, intelligent, inspiring and occasionally even challenging in debate (toughens ones sensitive hide against trolling and gratuitous negativity). It's particularly fascinating when you consider the effort they put into participation that will never gain them any individual attention or a cult following, and which will vanish into the 404 ether within a day at most. In some ways it's like shortwave pirate radio: the noise can make it difficult to sort out complex messages; and unless it's recorded, it vanishes into a haze of speculative anecdotes that occasionally misinterpret the zeitgeist.

We followed an extensive meta-humor thread on /tv/ Monday morning that was hilarious. It consisted of one Anon uploading a couple dozen spoof movie summaries written in the style of comedian Yakov Smirnoff's broken Russo-English ("In Soviet Russia, radio listen to YOU"), while the rest of us looked on in appreciative amusement. A couple of fractured tales about the Beatles battling ABBA were also very funny. We swiped this one, a spoof of the children's already creepy and bizarre TV show LazyTown, as internet pirates:

We are the Pirates

All the people of LazyTown were make a lazy.

Suddenly, Pirates made their danube across the ocean!

"Don't make your lazies!" shout Captain Pirate, "Join us in our piratings!"

The Pirates jumped into LazyTown and began to Pirate!

"It's nice to make pirate!" say Stephanie, and she turned to a Pirate!

Soon, all the Lazys stopped making their lazy and turned to Pirates!

The Pirates all went over to Computer.

"Of Computer to a new type of piratings!" say Sportacus, and he insert a disc through the Computer and began to extract the internets!

"Is goodly to extract many internets!" say Stephanie, and she made a stealing from many movies!

The music notes began to danube around, as the pirates owned the whole of internets!

Suddenly, the internet companies noticed that the internet was being made extracted!

"Our internets are being extracted from LazyTown!" boam the people who want to go internets.

The internets made 404 of their error.

The people were annoy at no internets, and made a sending nuke to LazyTown.

"Maybe we should have not made our stealings their detection!" shout Captain Pirate, as the nuke to collide LazyTown and a boom.

Audio of the now: On /mu/ we found an original music critique thread that included a few links relevant to our interests: experimental audio and sound collages. In particular we liked the industrial noise collages in Pray, Repent, Receive by solo artist Cretin Dilettante (aka Dustin Sheehan). This sort of thing isn't for every listener, but if you appreciate the sound design that goes into the soundtracks for movies and some dramatic TV shows (imagine the foley and sound design work of a David Lynch film minus Angelo Badalamenti's music) you'll probably enjoy it. We also liked the more accessible musical sensibility in Anklebiter by daszwolftehaus. It's his only piece currently on SoundCloud but we hope he'll pursue more of this melding of music and ambient noise.

Video of the now: At Lazytown, YOU ARE A PIRATE!!!

*/adv/ was split about 50/50 on whether RP should ease up off the bunnyman. We'll see. Pretty much depends on the bunny mob's own fondness for melodrama, which is often too lulzy to ignore.

Commander Bunny's true identity revealed!

"Murdered by pirates is good..."
--The Princess Bride

RP's sooper sekrit network of oh-noes-ninjas! infiltrated the Furry Rodent Nuthuggers and discovered the true identity of infamous shortwave pirate radio legend Commander Bunny.

Those who closely follow the U.S. shortwave pirate radio scene know the myxomatosis carrier is a legend in his own mind (and, to be fair, in troof), whose heritage gains another decade with each retelling. In the early 2000s he claimed to date back to the 1990s. By the mid-2000s he claimed WBNY was born and bred not in a briar patch but in the 1980s. By 2011 his lineage had scurried down a rabbit hole in the Tardis and pre-dated itself to the 1960s. While we fans of the bunnyman (yes, we are one, sarcastic bastards though RP may be) pondered the riddle of rabbit-time, a gift fell into our filthy beer-stained laps, in the form of a lulzy screencap.

Turns out behind that careworn furry mask Commander Bunny is none other than (drum roll, pl0x)... Dread Pirate Roberts!!1one!!11eleven!!

"Good night, Commander Bunny. Good work. Sleep well.
I'll most likely kill you in the morning."
--Dread Pirate Roberts

Sekrit Skwirrel managed to snatch this copy of a rabbity rant fresh off the Vines, just before someone thought better of it and vamoosed the evidence back into the vault.

Feast your jaded peepers on this gen-you-whine document salvaged from the FRN, guaranteed to be hardly shooped at all. (Max rez version for download.)

An excerpt from the now-deleted thread tells all:

"The other BS floating around the internet is that I'm not the "real" Commander *****. Seems I have to explain this every 5 years to the newbie monkeys over 9000 penises who think they know it all! I AM THE REAL COMMANDER ***** YOU DUMB ASSES!

"There have been 5 Commander *****'s over the years. Commander ***** dates back to the 60's and has been passed along to only the most deserving and meritorious Rabbits. You know like the Phantom (oh ghost who walks).

"I am the latest incarnation of Commander *****. Unquestionably the most inventive, intelligent and prolific, and whomever the Rabbit is that takes it over from me, has big paws to fill!"

--Commander Bunny bunnifesto, 3/18/11

He seems... I don't know... grumpy.

But how f*****g awesome is that! Even with the cryptic asterisks, the f*****g awesomeness provokes me into yet another spasm of metafictional bliss. I'm betting the original Commander Asterisk must have been William Goldman himself!

Buttercup: You're the Dread Pirate Roberts, admit it.
Commander Bunny: With pride. What can I do for you?
Buttercup: You can die slowly, cut into a thousand pieces.

We're guessing the original Commander ***** must have been loitering in the Saigon whorehouse room beneath Dave Rabbit's when Radio First Termer was oddcasting. The RFT mojo seeped through a rabbit hole in the floor and splooged all over the first poor fellow whose destiny it was to become the progenitor of a long line of talented, entertaining and increasingly curmudgeonly harecasters.

We note that ComBun is still struggling with the concept of "free". Free pogey bait from WBNY = good. Free speech on IRC or by "competitors" on radio = EVIL, GO DIE IN A FIRE!!! Ohh, the lolocaust.

Now, you didn't actually think we'd really expose ComBun's real identity did you? FFS, we may be trolls but we're not snitches. We leave that job to the bunny mafia. (More about that in an upcoming article.)

"Dread Commander Bunny had grown so rich, he wanted to retire.
He took me to his Montana cabin and he told me his secret.
'I am not the Dread Commander Bunny' he said. 'My name is ****...'"

"His name was 'asterisk' too?"

"Yes, well, never mind... I inherited the FRN from the previous
Dread Commander Bunny, just as you will inherit it from me.
The man I inherited it from is not the real Dread Commander Bunny either.
His name was **********. The real Bunny has been retired
15 years and living like a king on the Outer Banks.'"

Got any lulzy or informative screencaps or HTML copies to share? Drop RP a line. We don't pick on the FRN exclusively (at the moment we're just way behind on so much FRN hilarity it only seems like we're picking on them - hey, when you're the best, as you always affirm, ya gotta be ready for bushwhackers like RP). If it's radio-related and srsly funny we wanna hear the juice. We'd prefer unedited copies or screen shots - we'll do the shooping around here, varmints.

And only a moron would drop docs on anyone in the pirate radio scene, including people you think are "only" listeners - some of them are also ops. First of all, it violates the Prime Directive. Second, we don't give a shit. The real identities of most people in the pirate radio scene are irrelevant. As veteran FRN leader Pat Murphy often reminds us, much of pirate radio is a magic act - we don't need or even want to know how it's done. Only a very few people in pirate radio (for example, commercial broadcast media figures or those with political connections) might be considered "public figures" by most news media standards and cannot expect the same degree of privacy and anonymity. If we spot sockpuppets we'll check 'em for holes ourselves laugh. We're not here to fuck up people's real lives. But having fun with online shenanigans is fair game. And if you are so wrapped up in your pirate persona that you think it's real life, umm... it's not that important. Go take some food to a struggling family. Drive an elderly or handicapped neighbor to their doctor's appointment. Masturbate. All these are more important than pirate radio. Unless you're Lad, in which case masturbating while on air is probably a priority.

Until next time... have fun stormin' da castle! And stay tuned for the wrap-up of the Fester Trilogy, to be published as soon as BNtP comes out of his Jenkem-induced coma. Not fer nuttin' is he called Brown Nose the Pirate.

And for bumfuzzled lurkers, Commander Bunny is among the most talented and prolific shortwave pirate radio figures. Also occasionally rather too fond of the smell of his own farts, but aren't most creative people furries? (Actually his sockpuppeting nuthuggers are more pestiferous than ComBun hisself since they occasionally manage to f4g up the FRN so badly there isn't a facepalm in the world large enough to contain the samef4ggotree.) You can nibble from his garden by downloading or streaming audio from his various shows hare or hare, and friend him grovel to his majesty hare. He also offers excellent QSL packages for confirmed signal reports. RP has none since our unfunny efforts at degassing the lagomorph prolly don't endear us to his hareness. But we might ask for some pogey bait after we're safely behind seven maildrops.

Brown Nose the Pirate: Is very strange. I have been in the revenge business so long, now that it's over, I don't know what to do with the rest of my life.
Commander Bunny: Have you ever considered piracy? You'd make a wonderful Dread Commander Bunny.
BNtP: Really? You think so?
ComBun: No. You're a troll. You're ruining pirate radio. Burn in hell.

Fester, Part 2

As we resume our tale, RP remembers why we seldom approve per diem for Brown Nose the Pirate's freelance DXpeditions.

The ICOM elevator stops, but we're between the sixth and seventh floors. I can hear a garbled, whining voice coming from the hallway. I'm reaching for the emergency phone when the Jay-Kracker hybrid calmly raises a hand to indicate I should wait. "Our destination is between the sixth and seventh storeys," he explains.

With one hand he gently pats the Kracker-shaped lump under his tent-sized t-shirt and mutters "Shhh... shhh... my little feejee mermaid." With the other hand he slides open a hidden compartment on the control panel to reveal a tuning knob labeled "Jog Storey." He turns the dial slowly and the digital display reads 6.300... 6.350... 6.400... "This old ICOM elevator is slow," he says. "The internal backup battery died last year and the software was screwed up. We're hoping for an upgrade from ICOM by next Fest."

"You should get a software defined elevator," I suggest.

He glares at me. "Those things without real knobs? No, thanks."

The shrill voice outside the door is still mostly garbled and unintelligible, but seems familiar.

"You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, and I won't have it! Is that clear? You think you've merely stopped a few stations. That is not the case!"

I tilt an ear toward the elevator door, trying to recognize the voice. It seems familiar.

"Yes," Jay replies, "it's him. But no one ever hears him clearly until we reach nearly the seventh storey." He continued fine tuning "6.900... 6.915... 6.925..." and the voice snapped into sudden clarity.

"...have taken over frequencies, and now they must give them back! It is ebb and flow, tidal gravity! It is ecological balance! These are the enemies. There are no pirates but me! There are to be no slack-jawed, lip-drooling, knuckle-draggers! You will serve as vice president at my pleasure! Don't tell me about your Bowling League. Did you really believe they'd have any say in this? There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immane, interwoven, interacting, multivariate, multinational dominion...

The elevator door slides open, obscuring the shrill keening for a moment.

"...of me!"

I look up. We're on floor 6.925, a hidden storey between the 6th and 7th. I step toward the hall but Jay urgently waves me back. It's only been a few minutes since my last shot of Cuervo and Mickey's chaster but I'm getting antsy. And that suckling sound under Jay's carnival sideshow of a t-shirt is grating my nerves.

"Wait!" he hisses. "Listen!" And I do. The oddly pitched voice careening down the hall toward us is scouring my ears like a steel wool Q-tip dipped in Comet cleanser.

"My QSL packages will determine the totality of life on this planet! That is the natural order of things today. That is the atomic and subatomic and galactic structure of things today! And YOU have meddled with the primal forces of nature, and YOU... WILL... ATONE! Am I getting through to you, Kracker? You get up on your little 10 watt Corsair and howl about Bozo and Fansome and asshats and free speech and how you won't QSL and then you play Grateful Dead songs that nobody gives a crap about. There is no Bozo! There is no Fansome! There is no free speech! There is only WBNY and our affiliates and our mighty 8-watt International Relay Service!" (The voice is like Judge Doom from Who Framed Roger Rabbit, when he was dissolving in Dip. Only more annoying, if that's possible.)

"But people will think I'm an asshole."
(I'm hearing another voice... like Kracker's voice... but it can't be... he's in here, under Jay's shirt...) "I mean, just this week I accused Mr. Announcer of being a sockpuppet for Radio Ronin Shortwave and I fucked up. I forgot that Mr. Announcer is the op for CYOT. So I had to delete my post to cover my butt. Maybe he'll quit, I don't know. He seems so polite. I shouldn't be such an asshole all the time..."

"You are an asshole! Never forget it! It's what you do best! As my vice president your job is to troll my enemies, flame them, discourage them, chase them away from my Furry Rodent Network, For Rabbit Nuthuggers only!"

"But Pat always told us to never attack another pirate..."

"DOES PAT SEEM LIKE HE'S IN CONTROL OF ANYTHING ANYMORE?!?"
(Came the shrieking voice.)

"I guess not. But why me?"

"Because you're on the radio, dummy. Six people listen to you every time you broadcast.
Consider yourself lucky that you're not one of my designated nut polishers. That job is for Mosby and Thumper."

"I have seen the face of God."

"You're goddam right. Never forget it. Now get the fuck out of here and sell some of my t-shirts. Take plenty of extra large. The lobby is full of overweight middle aged DXers."

Jay motions me out of the elevator. A door slams open and shut again, toward the end of the hall where the shrieking voice seemed to be. A haggard 40-ish guy wearing aviator sunglasses shuffles past, shaking his head. Suddenly I recognize him - it's Kracker. "Fuck you, Bozo," he mutters without enthusiasm as he passes.

"Love you more," Jay replies gently.

Fuck me again, I'm thinking, and nearly swivel my head off spinning around to look at the lump under Jay's shirt.

Jay chuckles, bitterly. "You thought this thing suckling from my belly was Kracker? No. It's a clone, one of Dr. Benway's experiments gone horribly awry. Benway made it for me after culturing bits of spittle from Kracker's roaches and beer bottles and droplets of bile from his vomit. I suppose Benway thought I would punish and torture it as the real thing has tormented me." He paused for a moment, deep in thought.

"It's as cruel as the real thing, and even more effective at manipulating me into feeling sorry for it and putting up with its abuses." Jay looked down and rubbed the squirming lump. "My little homunculus. My little bit of revenge." He looked up sadly and muttered "Be careful what you wish for."

Benway, I'm thinking... I should have known he'd be mixed up in this. I watch the real Kracker shuffling dejectedly down the hall where he raps out a coded knock on a door. A few muffled words are exchanged and the door is opened. After Kracker enters the room a lank-haired guy peers out into the hallway with nervous, ferretlike energy. He looks like Robert Crumb. I'm half expecting Fat Freddy to show up next. He catches my glance and vanishes like his head was yanked back on a leash, leaving a cloud of smoke and Ozium behind.

"Cosmikdebris," Jay says, behind me.

I nod my head. "Sure, makes sense."

"This way," he says, indicating the room from which the shrieking voice had come. The coniglio di tutti conigli. I'm thinking of my Sheridan Blue Streak .20 cal. pump back home. One pill to the head always did the trick on lagomorphs. But this one had a serious mean streak. It had survived several assassination attempts and seemed to thrive on venom, bile and spite. Only the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch would do, and the nearest armory was in Pittsburgh at Our Lady of Perpetual Hostility.

I'm thinking back to my days as a covert anti-therapist/debriefing specialist for Benway, back when major medical insurance covered T.D, Total Demoralization. That was before Kaczynski, before the media found out what we really did. I remember Benway's theory:

"An agent is trained to deny his agent identity by asserting his cover story. So why not use psychic jiu-jitsu and go along with him? Suggest that his cover story is his identity and that he has no other. His agent identity becomes unconscious, that is, out of his control..."

Yeah, I'm thinking, why not. It might work. Rumor had it the bunnyman was a spook in a former life. Rumor had it he'd broken, lost the veils between his multiple cover aliases and his true identity... if there ever was one. Probably already primed for a post-hypnotic suggestion. All I needed was the key word or phrase. I mentally sorted through the triggers we'd been using to provoke predictable rages. Had to be one of those... maybe an offhand mention of a Canadian pirate radio station was all it took.

Jay rapped out a peculiar pattern on the door: .-- -... -. -.--

I'm looking down and see a shadow break across the green light under the door. The door cracks open. An acrid odor wafts by... old cedar shavings, urine and something hellish that seemed familiar.

Jay gestures for me to go in. For a moment I'm transfixed by the growing wet splotch on his t-shirt where his little Kracker-homunculus is suckling on... what? I shake my head, take a deep breath and move toward the door.

"Be careful what you wish for!" Jay hisses sharply, then turns and stalks away.
